Dental Hygiene

At Selly Park Dental, we place dental hygiene at the heart of great oral health. Preventive care is the foundation of everything we do, and our dedicated hygiene team helps patients maintain healthy gums, fresh breath, and long-term dental stability.

Our hygienists including Valda Johnson, who has over 15 years of experience with our practice, and Ella Mynett, known for her gentle, reassuring approach both provide personalised hygiene care tailored to each patient’s needs.

Why is dental hygiene so important?

Good dental hygiene prevents the most common oral health problems, including gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. By staying consistent with your hygiene routine and seeing our hygienists regularly, you lower the risk of needing complex or costly dental treatments later on.

What does good dental hygiene involve?

At Selly Park Dental, dental hygiene means a combination of effective at-home habits and routine appointments with our hygienists. We usually recommend booking hygiene visits at least twice a year. During these appointments, our team will assess your gums, review your daily routine, and liaise with your dentist to keep your oral health on track.

What happens during a hygiene appointment?

Your hygienist will begin with a full assessment of your gums and soft tissues before carrying out a professional clean. This removes plaque, tartar, and surface staining that can’t be removed at home. You’ll also receive tailored advice on brushing techniques, interdental cleaning, and any products that may help improve your gum or oral health.

How can I maintain great dental hygiene at home?

Our hygienists create individual care plans, but we usually recommend the following:

  • Brush twice daily for 2 to 3 minutes using fluoride toothpaste

  • Clean between your teeth every day with floss or interdental brushes

  • Brush your tongue to reduce bacteria and improve freshness

  • Replace your toothbrush or electric brush head every three months

Small daily habits, combined with regular visits to hygienists like Valda and Ella, can make a significant difference to your long-term oral health.
